Description

Once the early bird places are filled, the price will revert back to the normal workshop price.

Let’s go on a scavenger hunt of sound. Listen to something in the room, breathe that into your middle and allow it to mingle and dance through your nervous system. Your voice and accent can be experienced through your whole consciousness, not only heard but seen and smelled, tasted and touched. Let’s blur the lines between voice and speech. Explore “MMMMM” and “AHHHHH” and all sounds of human expression in your entire body, letting them flow through you.

This is a Linklater-based workshop that erupts into the world of Phonetics. Experience with Linklater Voice is not necessary. No experience with phonetics is necessary. The Sound and Movement exercises created by Kristin Linklater inspired Louis Colaianni to extend her work into the world of accents and so he created Phonetic pillows and explored this in his book The Joy of Phonetics and his upcoming book, Authentic Voice and Speech.

Launching into Phonetic Pillows from its origin of Sound and Movement allows participants to open the channels of the body to the senses. Have permission to experience their voice and accent through their entire bodies, allowing their vowels and consonants to literally jump, roll, dance, and be thrown around the room. With the assistance of associate teacher Courtney Ferguson, and myself, you will synthesize an environment where mindfulness is the pathway to your artistic force.

My ethic is to work nonprescriptively because in a time when diversity and inclusion are at the forefront of the arts, telling someone what is “good speech” is not part of who I am. What I teach is in the framework of personal identity, alongside diversity, identity becomes a very important context from which to teach. Encouraging students to fuse clear diction with impassioned communication, also known as “intelligible eloquence”, is my ongoing pursuit.
